- Expressways-Expressways are the highest class of roads in the Indian road network.hey are six or eight-lane controlled access highways where entrance and exit is controlled by the use of slip roads Currently, approximately 1,455.4 km of expressways operational in India.These Highways should permit only fast moving vehicles. Agra-lucknow expressways is the longest expressway in India after its inauguration on 21 November 2016 replacing Yamuna Expressway.
- National Highway (NH)-National highways are highways running through the length and breath of India, connecting major ports, foreign highways, capital of large state national highways constitute 1.7% of Indian roads, they carry 40% of the traffic.The majority of existing national highways are two-lane roads (one lane in each direction), though much of this is being expanded to four-lanes, and some to six or more lanes.
- State Highway (SH)- The state highways are usually roads that link important cities, towns and district headquarters within the state and connect them with National Highways or highways of neighbouring states. Thesehighways provide connections to industries or places from key areas in the state making them more accessible.
- Major District Roads (MDR)-A Road Network in a Block or District comprises of all categories of roads, such as National Highways, State Highways, Major District Roads, The MDR has lower speed and geometric design specification than National highway and state highway
- Other District Roads (ODR)-Other District roads are roads serving rural areas of production and markets and connecting those with other or with the main highways of a district. the Other district road has lower speed and geometric design specification than Major district roads.
- Village Road (VR)-Village roads are roads connecting village or group of villages with each other to the nearest road of higher category.
